Australian Electricity Market

transmission 1.jpg

Most of Australia’s electricity supply is delivered through three key wholesale markets: the National Electricity Market (NEM), the Western Australian Electricity Market (WEM), and the interim Northern Territory Electricity Market (I-NTEM).

The NEM spans the states of Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, covering a vast area interconnected by over 5,000 kilometres of transmission lines. It links the electricity networks these jurisdictions through interconnectors, making it one of the longest interconnected electricity systems globally. The WEM serves the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) in Western Australia, operating as an isolated grid and the largest electricity system in that state. The I-NTEM was established as a transitional market arrangement to support the operation and progression of the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System (DKIS) towards a more comprehensive electricity market. The DKIS is the largest electricity system serving the much smaller demand in the Northern Territory.

The graph below provides a real-time view of electricity supply and demand in the NEM and WEM. It shows the share of renewable energy contributing to the generation mix to meet actual system demand. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
